The invention of information technology (IT) has changed the work and working practices in many aspects. For instance, the invention of internet and computers enable communication between employees at all time whether at home, travelling, or at their workstation (Heerwagen, Kelly and Kampschroer, 2006). The essay examines the critical role played by the IT in changing work and working practices by highlighting the advantages before concluding with the possible demerit associated with IT in work ethics.
The implementation of IT in the workplace has improved service delivery and erased the need for the physical presence at the workplace. According to Dukes and Gilbreath (2015), adoption of IT enables employees to perform their duties at any corner of the earth. When employees work from anywhere at any time, they tend to improve the delivery of services. Most multinationals with branches across the globe use IT for remote control and administration of their branches. Therefore, IT plays a critical role in the enhancement of service delivery because one can perform their duties from any place.
The IT forms the main driver for the elimination of waste and defining the values of the customers. Organisations experience constant pressures owing to the dynamics of the customer value. However, the use of IT helps such organisations to remain relevant to gathering relevant information from their customers and increasing their service delivery by customizing the needs hence removing wastages (Kampschroer, Heerwagen and Powell 2007). The implementation of such strategies depends on efficient utilisation of IT structures.
The adoption of IT reduces the level of personal interaction between the employees (Heerwagen et al., 2006). When employees communicate in emails and chat sites, their social aspect becomes limited. Building a solid social environment requires one-on-one interaction, which IT lacks. However, sufficient strategies at organisational level may eliminate this factor.
