Recent advancements in technology have had a radical effect on the way individuals communicate. Findings indicate dependence on the computer screen or technology has negatively affected the quantity as well as the quality of face-to-face communication. May people are developing a reliance on technology to communicate with family and friends, and in turn neglecting to participate individually, uninhibited by computer related devices, even when in the company of others (Perry, 2010).
In his research, Drago (2015) noted that many people felt the quality or value of their conversations diminished in the company of technology. In fact, the majority of them felt disturbed when family or friends used computer communication devices while hanging out. Most of the respondents were concerned that technology is weakening the ability of the society to communicate face-to-face. It enhances what people share online, whereas reducing what they share face-to-face.
The presence of communication devices also interferes with individuals personal relationships in social settings (Perry, 2010). According to research by Hertlein and Ancheta (2014), these communication devices have negatively affected the quality of conversations, closeness, and connection, particularly when individuals are engaging in meaningful personal subjects.
There are concerns that the decline in the quantity of time spent by the youth interacting face-to-face could eventually have dire effects on their social skills development as well as their self-presentation. Drago (2015) also noted that most children thought their parents gave them less attention compared to that they gave their smartphones. They would often neglect to interact face-to-face with them until they were done responding to emails.
